My sister and I were once in the Child Welfare System so the death of Tina Fontaine struck me personally. If it wasn’t for my mother choosing to change her life around by becoming sober, the system could have likely failed us too.
This is knowledge that already exists within our Nations. The shift from reconciliation also allowed the series to be about the goodness within us and our communities, our present and our future.
Jessica stood strong and proud—wearing her jingle dress and beaded accessories in a space historically rooted and celebrated by Indigenous peoples, yet currently occupied by settler and colonial structures.
